Opinion Paragraphs

We have spent this week learning about writing an opinion paragraph. We studied a book, Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big, by Beatrice Breathed. In this book, Edwurd tells a huge fib that goes awry! In the end, he upsets the alien pigs, who come with the intention of squashing him. Fortunately, his sister steps in, tells a fib herself to take the blame, in order to save her brother. In the end, the are both saved from the pigs, they confess, and all works out as it should.
Based on our discussions of the book, students formed their own opinion about lying and whether or not it is okay. Here are some of their paragraphs.

Neyen
I think lying can be good but bad, too, for three reasons. First, lying is ok when you are protecting others. For example, when kids are little they don't know any better. Next, lying is bad when you are having fun. You can get in a habit of it. Also, you can hurt other's feelings. For example, Edwurd said Fanny was born form a poodle. Now you know lying can be good, but bad.

Aaryn
We shouldn't lie for 3 reasons. First, lying can hurt people's feelings. We can lose friends by telling lies. Next, you can get in trouble when you tell a lie. When they find out you can get in trouble. Also, people don't believe you when you tell the truth. They won't think you're telling the truth. As you can see, lying is not a good idea.

Halle
Lying is something okay for three reasons. First, it's sometimes okay to lie if you're helping people. Next, it's not okay to lie because you will get in trouble. You could get grounded. Also, it's not okay when you're putting somebody in danger or bullying them. You could bully them by hurting them. As you can see lying is sometimes okay.

Raynee
I think it's never okay to lie for three reasons. First, you can get in trouble. You can get bad karma. Next, people don't believe you. For example, people never believed the boy who cried wolf. Also, it hurts other people's feelings. If you lie in a fight it will hurt your friend's feelings. As you can see this is why we should NEVER lie.

Sadie and Sierra
Lying can be bad depending on a few reasons. First, do not lie for selfish reasons. You'll lie too much and people won't trust you. Next, it's okay to life if you are saving someone. If someone gets in trouble lie to save them. Also, do not lie a lot or it will become a habit. It could become a habit so no one will respect you. THese are a few reasons why you could lie.

Elijah
I say lying is bad for three reasons. First, it depends how you use it. You could help people or hurt them. Next, you can not stop lying once you start. You keep on getting in trouble. Also, it makes you selfish. It keeps you out of trouble. In conclusion, lying is bad.
